Common boating law violations on the
Chetek Chain of Lakes


 

Listed below arc the most common boating violations on the Chetek Chain of Lakes. The list was provided by Barron County Conservation Officer Russell Fell.

Operate boat without valid certificate of number ($156.20)
No person may operate, and no owner may give permission to operate, any boat on the waters of this state unless the boat is covered by a valid certificate of number from this state or another state.

Operate boat between sunset and sunrise without required lights ($156.20)
All motorboats operated after sunset, as published in the boating regulation pamphlet, shall display a stern light visible for 360 degrees and for at least two miles on a clear night. This light must be the tallest point on the boat so as to allow viewing for 360 degrees. All boats being operated after sunset shall also display a green light to starboard and a red light to port on the bow of the watercraft. (Note: Pontoon boats with canvas tops usually have the stern light attached to canvas,
when the top is folded down, so in the stern light. Replace these type of stern lights with a stern light on a staff.)

Failure to provide proper number of personal flotation devices ($143.80)
All watercraft being operated on the water must provide one wearable type PFD of the proper size and type and in a serviceable condition for each occupant of the watercraft. In addition, if the watercraft is over 16 feet in length, the watercraft must also contain at least one throwable type PFD. All PFDs are required to be accessible.

Operate boat at a speed in excess of posted notice ($156.20)
In a slow-no wake buoyed area, slow-no wake speed is defined as the slowest possible speed the craft can travel and still maintain steerage.

Operate motorboat within 100 feet of (dock, raft, pier, boat launch, or buoyed restricted area ($168.60)
Motorboats operating within 100 feet of a dock, raft, pier. boat launch, buoyed restricted area or occupied anchored boat, shall operate at a speed of slow-no wake.

Operate personal watercraft at a speed in excess of slow-no wake within 100 feet of another boat ($168.60)
All personal watercraft shall be at a speed of slow-no wake when within 100 feet of any other boat on the water and shall be at slow-no wake speed when within 200 feet of shoreline.

Permit operation by underage operator ($143.80)
No person may operate a personal watercraft in this state under the age of 12. Persons at least 12 but under 16 may operate a personal watercraft only if they have successfully completed a DNR certified boat safety course. Parental accompaniment is not a substitute for a DNR certified boat safety course. No one under the age of 10 may operate a motorboat. Persons at least 10 but under 12, may operate a motorboat while being accompanied by an adult. Persons at least 12 but under 16 may operate a motorboat while being accompanied by an adult or if they have successfully completed a certified boat safety course.

Operate motorboat or personal watercraft pulling water skier without an observer ($143.80)
All boats towing a water skier/tuber must have, on board, at least one competent observer in addition to the operator. Rear view mirrors are not a substitute for an observer.
