No, you don't have to get your long johns on. A pair of
shorts and a light rain suit to block the wind is all you will
need to keep the morning chill off you, when fishing in the early
mornings coming up. This cold front will push the fish to
some deeper water, bluegill fishermen are having good success
drifting in 8-11 ft. of water with worms and waxies for bait. If
you can find a nice weed edge to drift along that is a plus.
Walleye s are occasionally being caught along some of the same
weed lines while trolling in the early morning hours and early
evening hours of the day. Trolling walleye spinner rigs
tipped with a fat head minnow along some of the steep shore lines
can also get you a walleye or two.
Northern pike have been very active through out the Chetek chain
of lakes. With the first crop of weeds dying on the chain,
Fishermen are able to fish a lot of water you could not get
a bait through two weeks ago. Try fishing a silver minnow or
a spinner bait above and through the sparse weeds left in some of
the bays. Try fishing a dare devil with some erratic motion.
An orange or red trailer attached to your bait is another good
enticement for for pike.
Crappies are being caught while drifting the deeper parts of the
chain. Vertical jigging your favorite crappie jig with a
crappie minnow at various depths in the deep waters in the
middle of the lakes. You might even catch a walleye once in
a while too.
The Bass fishing has just been great for the bass fishermen.
Plenty of 2-3 lb fish are being caught all over the chain. They
are in the shallows, the deep water and in the weeds. Texas
rigged worms have been working great for the novice fishermen
fishing the Chain of lakes. You may get a few northern pike bites
while fishing this set up,also.
Happy independence day to all. And please say "thank you" to to
a veteran when your paths cross. Please, remember the ones
that are fighting for freedom at this time. Have safe 4th of
July, 2009.
